Hearts to Africa founders Samuel Burke and Ann Morant first visited The Gambia in 1997.

They found very welcoming people who were keen to explain their culture and traditions.

But they were struck by the poverty and bad condition in which these people lived.

The children in this photo made us feel very welcome but we had nothing to give them explained Sam.

Once the couple had returned to their hotel, they went through their suitcases, packed up all the items they had, returned to the village and gave everything to the children.

We promised them that we would return to The Gambia, but next time with lots of gifts for them.

Sam said, “ I had returned to my ancestral home and felt that I could do more for the people who live there. I will not be another tourist making promises.”
