Mr Samuel Burke

A successful development program starts with great people.

Hearts to Africa can truly state they have got great volunteers with a wide variety of skills and age group.

The commitment & importance of our programs was clearly demonstrated at our awards ceremony held on the 6th December, despite being the last shopping day for the whole country to prepare for their Tobuski Day, 35 schools still attended the awards and because of distance 10 other schools rearranged to visit at a later date.

Hearts to Africa’s award ceremonies have truly empowered over 36,140 young people and have given them the opportunity to show their peers their full potential to be recognised for their achievements through hard working self-motivation, which we hope will continue for many years.

We are pleased to see that over the years we have inspired not just individuals, but also changes in other charitable organisations & companies.

We hope together we will make Africa a better place for all to live in Peace and with Pride.

Thanks to all our past & present management teams, supporters and volunteers.

Please continue to support us in 2009.

45 schools with 36140 students have shown great interest in registering for these Awards.

You are here today because you have shown:

You have great self-motivation, enthusiasm and have a positive attitude to studying.
You have achieved the highest grades across all subjects.
You are consistently trying hard to achieve success in spite of severe difficulties.
You are exceptionally supportive, kind and caring to your peers at all time.

You should all be proud of yourself, as we are of you.

I am proud to know my volunteering time has helped thousands of people whether I travel to Africa or not.  Any sponsors to help me return?”

Shaun:

Appeal to have a Health Centre built in Kathantha Village

The three year old boy in this photo was involved in a petrol fire incident that burned over 97% of his body. The mother had sent for the purchase of kerosene, instead petrol was delivered to her.  She placed the assumed kerosene in her lamp and when she struck the match fire blazed.

The fire sprung and lit on her son who was coming towards her without her realising. Someone who had a motor cycle in the village offered to take the boy to the nearest Health Centre which is 6 miles from the village.  On the way, his motor cycle tyre burst so the helpful young man carried the boy to the Health Centre.

When they arrived the Health Officers did what they could, but had to refer them to the nearest Hospital which is 24 miles away.

After 17 hours his little body was cleaned but he died an hour later.

He could have been alive today, if his village had a basic First Aid Facility.

African Caribbean Re-Union – have just completed building this school for the Kathantha Village. They will now turn one classroom into a temporary First Aid Facility and arrange for two local Health Officers to help the village.

Miss Samantha Chase and Dr Sekai Ngarize

Miss Samantha Chase - Hearts to Africa. Dr Sekai Ngarize, thank you for wanting to help us in supporting children in Africa. I have been a volunteer for eight years working endlessly collecting educational material and other gifts for the school children of Africa. We hope the gifts we have given you for the school children of Zimbabwe will help them to work together in building a better future.

Dr Sekai Ngarize – I am a nutrition scientist with a Bsc (Hons) in Nutrition and a PhD in Food Science.  I work for the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), responsible for developing policies on a number of environmental issues at a national and international level for the UK.  I enjoy voluntary work with a particular focus on youth development and education. In the past I have worked as nurse and was involved in public health work which exposed me to helping the needy in local communities in the UK and abroad.

My work with Hearts to Africa will focus on helping mainly orphaned school children in the remote parts of Zimbabwe, by sending your gifts to schools, villages, farm workers, and AIDS orphans. Mr Lamiel BK Phiri (contact person in Harare - Zimbabwe) and I are now committed to working on a voluntary basis with Hearts to Africa, in educating the innocent children of this world.
