Sheriff's Letter
Hi Hearts to Africa,
I just hope that you all got a good trip and a safe journey back home. It has been quite a while since after our meeting at the Brikama Community Radio Station.
May be I should introduce myself again. I am Sheriff, the 15 year old boy who won the computer with the other girl. I am fulfilling my promise of writing to you to tell you how the computer has benefited me.
The computer made a great change in my life and has now helped me to write out my project and submit it on time. My project was the first to be submitted among all the twenty other advocates and my work was found to be the most accurate.
All this is thanks to the help of Hearts to Africa. You are people who have truly devoted your Hearts to Africa. The report I wrote was about the state of the children, especially the needy and disabled. It also contained some vital information about the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its optional Protocols and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
You have done what all African descendants in the Diaspora should have done. They need to follow your footsteps and emulate what exactly you are doing. There is no adjective in the dictionary that I can use to describe the kind gesture and generosity that you have shown to the people, especially the children of Africa.
Without withstanding, I would like to tell you that the child based organisation that I have founded, which Alwyn knows about is ready to work with Hearts to Africa. I am the Executive President of the organisation. It is called The Young Talented Organisation (TYTO). At the time of your visit to The Gambia, we were preparing for the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting. Simpson (Marcus Carvey) was briefed about that too.
We also have a weekly radio programme but it is now at halt. The Young Talented Organisation is ready to work not only as partners but special representatives of Hearts to Africa in The Gambia. This is because we have a lot in common as we are all on the path of helping the needy and disabled children of Africa and promoting African history, culture, tradition, norms and values.
The organisation will formally write to you via the internet and through the P.O Box. They will send some pictures that were taken during the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting. You will also receive the full report of the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting, which was compiled by myself.
Oh, I nearly forgot to tell you that the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting is a special event celebrated every year on the 10th December. On the day, children take control of media airways and only their voices are heard on radios and they are the only ones who appear on TV. They do all broadcasting and reporting. This year, I was elected by the children to be the co-ordinator and I did well.
I promised to send you a copy of my school report for last term. The results are not yet out because we resumed back to school just on the 3rd of January, last Wednesday. But I will make it a duty to ensure that you have it.
I wish you all a happy 2007. Go into 2007 with much pleasure and success. Prosperity and happiness will be yours. With all the best wishes from the sea bed of my heart.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. I miss and love you all.
In the name and well-being of children I remain.
Yours Sincerely,
Sheriff

1/22 APPRECIATION LETTERS AND A DIARY BY: Ms Yasmin Herbert
Experiencing Africa
Gambia

Yasmin gave farmers work tool
I am aged 10 and this was my first trip to Africa. When I got off the plane in Africa, there were lots of men dressed in gowns and women beautifully dressed in their traditional clothes. It was quite a long way to the hotel and the roads were bumpy and dusty plus the country was very hot and sunny.
What I liked most about Africa is the people are very friendly they were always waving to us. We rested for the first two days and used the time to get to know the area where we were staying.
Monday 9th December we started our work, travelling to where the things were stored. There were lots of things to see on the journey especially the market place where people was selling different things and children younger than me with slices of melons, oranges and water in bags walking around selling.
When our van stopped children would gather around it, wanting to know where we came from. Many tried to give us pieces of paper with their names and addresses on, so we could write to them. When we got to the school and I saw all the children outside the gate, I felt very sad because they all wanted to have pencils and pens so that they could go to school. We are lucky because in England we have all the equipment in school.

Gave gifts to Head Teacher at Sanyang Lower Basic School
I brought some of my own things to give to a girl about my own age and size at the school. When I gave the bag to her she was very happy and she thanked me.
I enjoyed it when we gave gifts to people in the streets, villages and children in schools they were very happy and surprised. They showed their happiness by praying or sometimes dancing. This was good because I knew that they were pleased with the things that they got.
I had a really good time and I will be returning to help more children.
The End, no it’s the beginning!!
